Overview

The Department of Community Development Services is responsible for the administration and enforcement of all construction codes, zoning related matters, rental housing licensing, some nuisance ordinances and property maintenance.  Additionally, the Department provides assistance with minor home repair to eligible applicants and referrals for housing rehabilitation assistance.

Ferndale in recent years has experienced a phenomenal turn around from the conditions during the 1970’s and 1980’s.  Each year the numbers of permits and inspections has increased approximately 10% over the previous year.  This is reflected in new housing construction, rehabilitation and investment in the housing stock that once was stagnant.  While new urbanism is touted nationally, Ferndale is new urbanism with sidewalks, street trees, front porches and a community that is reinventing itself with significant private investment.  Supporting this is the on-going public investment in new schools, water and sewer lines, park improvements and street resurfacing.
