Community Media Network Board of Directors
Ferndale, Michigan - The City of Ferndale is seeking a resident
volunteer to serve on the Community Media Network Board of
Directors. Community Media Network (CMN) is a Michigan based
charitable organization whose mission is to empower individuals and
organizations by working to advance the use, development and support
of community media resources. CMN is one of the largest and most
prestigious public access organizations in Michigan. Since its
inception in 1983, CMN has supported Public Access and residents,
organizations, schools and agencies of the consortium, with free or
low-cost access to television production, training and cablecast on
a non-discriminatory basis. It currently serves 11 cities in
southeastern Oakland County with a subscriber base of nearly 140,000
people. CMN resources allow the public to produce public access
television shows that reflect the diverse community in Oakland
County and Michigan.
CMN is led by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board sets
policy, but is not involved in day-to-day operations. One Director
is appointed by each community CMN serves. Each Director holds
office until his or her resignation. Ferndale's Director recently
resigned creating a vacancy on the Board. The Director must be a
Ferndale resident but may not be a county, state, or federal elected
official or an agent or employee of Comcast or WOW! The Board meets
monthly, usually from 4 PM to 6 PM on Tuesday in Troy. Dress
is business casual. Directors are expected to read the agenda in
advance and attend each meeting.
The Board currently includes a mixture of professionals and
retirees with private and public sector experience. The ideal
candidate enjoys television, appreciates free speech, and is a
patient team player willing to participate in CMN events or training
and comfortable interacting with CMN's diverse members. Technical
expertise is not required but Directors should not be tech-averse.
